Power runs the world. To become an effective manager and leader while strategic insight, team building, creating effective organizations are exceedingly important - unfortunately, given the plethora of people we encourter, it becomes important to learn to effectively navigate relationships in an organizations. To navigate relationships, requires learning to wield power. A dirty word , indeed in an organization context, is what I have always felt.
As a personality, you can basis your ability and intent, fall within the below personality types
It's a fascinating survey developed by DuBrin called Political Orientation Survey.
This course I am doing first establishes that whether we like it or not, to navigate power relationships is a must. First awareness, then the choice of the degree to which you wield it. Power used to be defined as how we manipulate people but a newer definition calls it the assymetric control of resources in a social relationship. And in order to build power there are just three techniques - Increase your resources, Decrease access to resources for others, and, Increase the value of the resources you have at hand.
Have you read the story of Tom Sawyer and his punishment of painting fences? It's one of my favourites. When punished by his aunt and being made to paint the fences, he makes the task look so attractive that other kids start giving him apples, strings, marbles etc., in order to be given a chance to paint the fence. Tom Sawyer, made a rather useless resouce become super valuable and negotiated with it to increase his available resources. Neat technique!
